Installing Mathematica 8

These instructions work both at home and at Brandeis to install Mathematica 8 from our Site License. I believe the license covers faculty and postdocs (see http://lts.brandeis.edu/techhelp/software/cssm/mathematica.html)

Notes on older versions at Mathematica Notes.

Request a license key

  1. Go to the Wolfram website and request a key using your @brandeis.edu email address. If you don't have an account there yet, create one. You want a license for a single machine. You can get licenses for Windows, linux, or Mac OS X - there is not a problem with getting one of each.

Mac OS X

  1. download the appropriate zip file from http://software.brandeis.edu/Mathematica or https://wormhole.brandeis.edu/Mathematica/,DanaInfo=software.brandeis.edu+ to your computer -- alternatively, use the download link that you are mailed after requesting a license key to download from the Mathematica website.
  2. extract the installer from the zip file. Use the system supplied Archive Utility to unzip the file (double clicking probably works)
  3. drag the application package Mathematica.app to the folder /Applications
  4. open the application. You will need to paste in the activation key you got from Wolfram. You will need to be on the internet when you do this.

Windows

  1. download the appropriate zip file from http://software.brandeis.edu/Mathematica or https://wormhole.brandeis.edu/Mathematica/,DanaInfo=software.brandeis.edu+ to your computer computer -- alternatively, use the download link that you are mailed after requesting a license key to download from the Mathematica website.
  2. extract the installers from the zip file. Right-click and "Extract All". 7-zip is a very nice zipping and unzipping tool if you need one.
  3. run the setup.exe file in the folder you just created. Be patient, this takes a while to run and doesn't produce visible feedback for a minute or two while running.
  4. launch Mathematica from the Start menu

(i don't actually remember if you have to paste in the activation key when running setup.exe or the first time you run the program -- it'll be obvious)

Linux

  1. Use the download link that you are mailed after requesting a license key to download from the Mathematica website.
  2. save the file Mathematica_8.0.0_LINUX.sh to your computer.
  3. http://support.wolfram.com/kb/1146 and my testing suggest:
    1. run the Mathematica_8.0.0_LINUX.sh file as root (e.g. sudo bash ./Mathematica_8.0.0_LINUX.sh
    2. specify locations for the installer to put things. If you are prompted for changes to SELinux, that seems reasonable to allow.
    3. launch Mathematica (e.g. /usr/local/bin/Mathematica )
    4. type the activation key in the dialog you get the first time you launch the program.

the versions claimed to be supported are:

  • Ubuntu 7-10
  • RHEL 4 (seemed to launch ok at least on RHEL 6)
  • CentOS 5
  • Debian 5
  • openSUSE 11

let me know what you find works or doesn't.
